Let Them Hang
Believe it or not, I am talking about your arms. In the last article I discussed ways
to get your weight off of your heels, and how that improves posture and balance.
Now I want to talk to you about what to do with your arms when preparing to hit a full golf shot.
The most normal thing to do is stretch your arms out so they are rigid and straight
and then reach your arms out towards the ball. It basically looks like you are
drawing a straight line from your body to the ball. Your arms and the club should
not make a straight line. There should be an angle between the arms and the club .
shaft. The only way to achieve this is to let your arms hang from your shoulders.
Don't reach out! If you bow at the hips just a bit, you will see that your arms will
hang a few inches from your legs. That is good. As long as your hands aren't
between your legs you will be in a be better posture.
The other part to this is in order to let your arms hang, you must remove the
tension in them. The less tension, the more potential for power and precision.
I know that sounds weird, but if you can remove tension from your upper body
you'll be that much closer to effortless power. Just like Freddie Couples, now
who doesn't like that easy swing.
Therefore, just by letting your arms hang from the shoulders instead of reaching
for the ball with them, you achieve better balance as well as potential for more
power and distance. Simple right?!
